Gas prices 45 cents lower than last year | News, Sports, Jobs

Average gas prices in Kahului are now 45 cents lower than they were at the same time last year, as Hawaii continues to see a downward trend in gas prices, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch released Thursday.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Kahului was $4.87 as of Thursday, three cents lower than last week and 45 cents lower than the average price of $5.32 in Kahului during the first week of April 2022.

Statewide, the average gas price was $4.80 as of Thursday, which was two cents lower than the previous week and down from $5.23 during the first week of April 2022.

Hilo saw the biggest year-over-year decline of 49 cents, going from $5.29 to $4.80, while Honolulu’s prices dropped 46 cents from $5.15 last year to $4.69 this year. Lihue did not see the same kind of drop — its average price of $5.23 was 20 cents lower than last year’s rate of $5.43.

Hawaii’s gas prices continue to be higher than the rest of the nation, which averaged $3.55 a gallon as of Thursday, six cents higher than the previous week and also 60 cents below the average of $4.15 per gallon that it saw in early April of last year.
