Mark Halperin is an American author, anchor, and columnist. He’s worked with MSNBC, Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Politics, and Time magazine. He co-authored the books Game Change (2010) and Double Down: Game Change 2012 (2013). Mark Evan Halperin was born into a Jewish family on January 11, 1965, in Bethesda, Maryland. His father, Morton, was a foreign policy expert. His mother is Ina Young. He has two brothers, David and Gary. Halperin attended Walt Whitman High School followed by Harvard University. He graduated in 1987 with a BA degree.
CAREER
Halperin began his career as a journalist with ABC News in 1988. He started out as a desk assistant and later as a researcher for their flagship program ‘World News Tonight’. His next position was as an assignment reporter in Washington. Halperin covered Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign as an off-air producer. He also served as a producer for ABC’s special events in New York. Halperin served as the political director for ABC News for 10 years starting in 1997. During his tenure, he made frequent appearances on a number of the network’s television and radio programs. He also founded and served as editor of ‘The Note’. Halperin was elevated to a political analyst for ABC News in March 2007. That same year he was hired as an editor-at-large and political analyst for Time magazine.
Halperin’s first book, The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008, was published in October 2006. It was co-authored by John F. Harris. He worked with journalist John Heilemann on the books, Game Change (2010) and Double Down: Game Change 2012 (2013). The book ‘Game Change’ was made into a 2012 political drama film for HBO. It was directed by Jay Roach and stars Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, and Ed Harris. Halperin joined MSNBC in 2010 as a senior political analyst. He also serves as a political analyst for Bloomberg Television and as a contributor for Bloomberg Politics. He co-hosted the talk show ‘With All Due Respect’ from 2014 until its cancellation in January 2017. He co-hosted the Showtime documentary series, The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth (2016-17), alongside John Heilemann and Mark McKinnon.
