Although born in Boston, Brett was bought up in El Paso, Texas, and attended Cathedral High School in his teens.
For his education, he attended Emerson College in Boston where he graduated in 1993 with a degree in Political Communication.

He studied for Master of Arts degree in Homeland Security Studies between 2004 and 2008 from the American Military University.
